Five Arrested in Uttar Pradesh over Religious Conversion Allegations

New Delhi: Police in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh have arrested five individuals following accusations of illegal religious conversion. The charges stem from a prayer program held at the residence of a Dalit family, where a celebration known as Urs was taking place.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the incident involved a Dalit woman named Urmila and her husband, Ajit Verma, from the Mudha area. The couple reportedly constructed a shrine in their home, encouraged by the arrested individuals, with hopes that it would alleviate Urmila’s health issues.

During the Urs celebration on January 10, members of the Bajrang Dal, a Hindutva organization, intervened and reported the event to local authorities. The group accused the participants of attempting to convert the Dalit family to Islam.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Nooruddin, aged 55, his nephew Meraj Hassan, aged 32, Khalif, aged 42, Irfan, aged 46, and Muhammad Hanif, aged 52. A formal case has been registered against them, though Urmila, when speaking to local media, refrained from making any negative statements regarding the accused.

At the police station, Urmila and Ajit Verma spoke to reporters, firmly denying any conversion to Islam. Despite their denial, the FIR was filed based on a complaint in their name.
