ILO and WWF-Pakistan Showcase Achievements at ILES Project Closing Ceremony

Karachi: The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan) marked the conclusion of their collaborative project aimed at enhancing labor and environmental standards in Pakistan’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The closing ceremony of the International Labour and Environmental Standards Application in Pakistan’s SME’s Project (ILES) focused on the achievements, impacts, and future challenges faced by the project beneficiaries.

According to a statement by United Nations Pakistan, the event featured a panel discussion that included prominent figures such as Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, and Mr. Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development.

Key stakeholders, ILO and WWF Pakistan beneficiaries, partner agencies, and donors attended the ceremony. Mr. Geir Tonstol, ILO Country Director for Pakistan, and Jeroen Willems, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Pakistan, were also present, highlighting the project’s collaborative nature.

The ILES project, a joint initiative by ILO and WWF-Pakistan, aimed to improve working conditions and promote sustainable environmental practices within SMEs in Pakistan. Discussions at the event underscored the importance of maintaining and building upon the progress achieved by the project.

Mr. Hammad Naqi Khan, Director General of WWF Pakistan, emphasized the project’s role in fostering sustainable business practices, which are increasingly vital in addressing global environmental challenges.

The ceremony concluded with a call to action for continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the sustained implementation of improved labor and environmental standards in Pakistan’s SME sector.
