Srinagar: A man from the Kupwara district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir has vanished in Russia after being tricked into participating in the Russia-Ukraine conflict with the promise of a well-paying job.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, 27-year-old Zahoor Sheikh, from Karnah, last communicated with his family on December 31, 2023. He informed them he would be undergoing “training” and would be out of reach for three months. Since that message, all contact has been lost, leaving his family in a relentless search for information.
Zahoor Sheikh’s father, Mohammad Amin Sheikh, shared that his son had been earning INR 30,000 monthly before being misled by agents offering a high-paying position in Russia. Upon his arrival, Zahoor realized he and others from India were coerced into fighting alongside Russian soldiers.
In a desperate bid for information, Mohammad Amin has repeatedly sought help from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Moscow. However, his efforts have so far been in vain. “It has been over a year with no trace of my son. He sought a better future but has become a victim of deceit,” he expressed.
This incident is not isolated. The Indian government has reported 12 deaths and 16 missing cases among Indian nationals caught in the conflict, with many more allegedly deployed by Russian forces.
Reports indicate these individuals were deceived into joining the war under the guise of working as “army security helpers.” The mounting outcry over this exploitation has led to calls for urgent action to locate and repatriate those affected. Families of the missing, like Zahoor’s, continue to endure uncertainty and distress.
