Islamabad: In Gilgit-Baltistan, polling for general elections is set to take place tomorrow as the region prepares for an important electoral event.
According to Radio Pakistan, the final voter lists released by the Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan reveal that the total number of registered voters across the 10 districts is 963,034. This figure includes 566,097 male voters and 456,937 female voters. A total of 396 candidates are contesting for the 24 general seats of the Gilgit Assembly, with 266 individuals running as independent candidates.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly comprises a total of thirty-three seats, including twenty-four directly elected members. Additionally, there are six seats allocated for women and three reserved for technocrats. In preparation for the elections, the Chief Election Commissioner of Gilgit-Baltistan, Raja Shahbaz Khan, has delegated the powers of first-class magistrate to all District Returning Officers and Returning Officers. This measure aims to ensure the peaceful and transparent conduct of the elections.
The powers granted to these officials will remain effective until the official announcement of the election results. The Chief Election Commissioner has emphasized the commitment to ensuring free, fair, and impartial elections at all costs.
