Quetta Court Criticizes Delay in Dengue Equipment Deployment

Quetta, In a recent hearing at the Balochistan High Court, presided over by a two-member bench consisting of Justice Abdullah Baloch and Justice Rozi Khan Breach, significant concerns were raised regarding the delayed deployment of crucial medical equipment needed to combat the dengue outbreak in Kech District. The hearing focused on a constitutional petition filed by Wahab Baloch, highlighting the urgent need for platelets and CBC (Complete Blood Count) machines in the district.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Balochistan, during the session, Dr. Ababagar, DHO Kech, alongside the Additional Advocate General and representatives from the Health and Finance Departments, were present. The court noted with disappointment that despite assurances given on May 30, 2024, by the Secretary of Health and the Director-General of PDMA, the region had received only three CBC machines to date, and the critically needed platelets machines had yet to be delivered.

The Health Department representative informed the court that the Chief Minister had approved the summary for purchasing the platelets machines and the matter was currently with the Finance Department for consideration. He revealed that although the tender process was complete, the acquisition and distribution had stalled due to the non-release of funds by the Finance Department.

The court expressed frustration over the administrative delays, particularly given the escalating dengue crisis in Kech, where 21 deaths have already been reported. The judges ordered the Secretary of Health, the Secretary of Finance, and the Director-General of PDMA to appear in person on June 13, 2024, at 11:30 am. They are expected to provide a thorough explanation for the delays and submit a comprehensive report on the measures taken to address the outbreak.

The session underscored the judiciary’s role in scrutinizing public health management and governmental response to health crises, emphasizing the urgency of effective and timely action to prevent further loss of life.
