KARACHI: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has released a detailed checklist aimed at enhancing the preparedness of SME units across Pakistan. The initiative, led by UNISAME President Zulfikar Thaver, underscores the necessity for small and medium enterprises to equip themselves to manage emergencies effectively, emphasizing worker safety and continuity of operations.
In its guidance, UNISAME has recommended that all SME units maintain essential safety equipment, including first aid boxes, fire extinguishers, and portable lamps. The checklist also highlights the importance of having UPS systems and alternate energy sources on standby. Additionally, UNISAME advises keeping potable drinking water and energy biscuits readily accessible at the unit’s help desk.
To ensure uninterrupted production, the checklist urges units to stock sufficient raw and packing materials. Logistics operations should be in a state of readiness, with preemptive checks conducted to confirm their effectiveness.
The union further recommends that SME units keep emergency contact numbers for their workers, staff, and local authorities, such as the nearest police station and civil defense centers, easily accessible. Helpline numbers for social welfare organizations are also advised to be on hand.
While civil defense authorities have their own guidelines, UNISAME has issued this reminder given current circumstances that require heightened vigilance. The union is also forming a committee under Rabee Altaf Malik to assist its members, with a dedicated helpline number for emergencies.
