France-Based Sikhs Urge UN to Address India’s State-Sponsored Persecution

Paris: France-based Sikhs are calling on the United Nations to address what they describe as India’s state-sponsored persecution. They plan to submit an urgent letter to the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), seeking intervention to protect Sikh rights and religious freedoms.

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the letter outlines a history of unpunished atrocities against Sikhs in India, spanning over four decades. It highlights the 1984 massacre of 36 Sikhs in Haryana, where the accused remain free despite substantial evidence against them. The letter criticizes the Justice T.P. Garg-led commission for its failure to hold the perpetrators accountable.

The Sikhs’ plea also points to injustices within India’s judiciary, where Sikh political prisoners have been detained for decades without trial. Many of these prisoners were reportedly incarcerated for seeking justice, illustrating a pattern where dissenters are suppressed while perpetrators of violence evade justice.

Additionally, the community condemns the Modi government’s policies, particularly the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal project. They argue that this initiative undermines Punjab’s agrarian economy by threatening its water resources, potentially leaving farmers in financial ruin.

The letter contends that the oppression of Sikhs is a global human rights concern that requires prompt international attention. It calls for the UNHRC to recognize historical injustices, ensure accountability for ongoing oppression, and take steps to prevent future violations against Sikhs.

“As the UNHRC convenes, the world must not allow India’s state-sponsored persecution to be normalized,” the letter states. “It is time for Sikh voices to be heard in the halls of global justice. The time for action is now.”
