Islamabad: National Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert for rain, wind, storm, and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood in various parts of the country, specifically in the Northern Areas, for the next twelve hours.
According to Radio Pakistan, a significant increase in temperature has been observed in northern regions of Pakistan, particularly in Gilgit Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This temperature rise has led to the melting of glaciers and snow cover, thereby increasing river flows.
The areas that require vigilant attention include Ghujerab River and Shimshal River at Hunza, Braldu River at Shigar, Husher and Saltaro rivers at Ghancha, and Uzhnu Gol in Chitral.
Residents near major rivers, streams, or nullahs in these areas are advised to stay vigilant for sudden rises in water levels, especially at night and during heavy rainfall. They are also encouraged to identify safe evacuation routes near these water bodies and secure household valuables, vehicles, and livestock at elevated safe spots.
Additionally, the NDMA advises residents to keep emergency kits, food, drinking water, and medical supplies ready for three to five days. Travel near glacial lakes, rivers, and narrow valleys should be avoided.
